History of Sole Alley

  • Arlington Rogers and Damon Alexander who advocated for the community by helping us to apply for this grant at the city.

  • Alejandro Gutierrez with Arts Connection who facilitated the art portion of the grant, helping give opportunities to local artists such as Brenda Angel and Duan Kellum who designed and painted two beautiful murals.

  • Jay Mccrary with Creative Grounds who designed the typography of the classic neon sign that adorns the entrance to Sole Alley and gives ode to Route 66.

  • Lynn, Azzam, David, Nathan, Donna, Malcom, Ryan and other city staff who worked tirelessly to execute the grant and ensure that we met the Clean California guidelines.

  • Danny Cancino and Ashley Gonzalez with SDC Engineering Inc. who did the construction for Sole Alley.

  • Vincent Alvarez and Mark Cloud from Southern California Edison whom without their unwavering dedication to assisting Realicore install a new electrical transformer in the alley, the project would have been delayed, thus jeopardizing the grant funding requirements.

Sole Alley existed in a dilapidated state for several decades before a Clean California Grant helped to revitalize it into the beautiful space it is today.

This alley was created only as an afterthought, shaped by the buildings that were developed around it. The buildings around Sole Alley were erected from the early 1900s to the 1950s creating a unique “L-shaped” space.

Before we shut this alley off to cars and transformed it into pedestrian paradise, it was just an easement for the fire department, utility companies and storage for trash bins.

It makes you wonder which uninspired spaces are out there, waiting to be turned into the next cool spot.
